  • "A Set of Lines, A Stack of Paper" is the second in a series of exhibitions and publication based on a wide-reaching research about writing with the title 'Possible Content for 18 Pages'. The original typewritten manuscript of Vilém Flusser's essay 'The Gesture of Writing' provides the thematic and formal-aesthetic foundation for reflecting the act of writing at the intersection of linguistic, visual, physical and spatial communication. 'To write,' says the philosopher about the basic requirements that should lead to a complete piece of writing, we need 'a blank surface, for instance a white leaf of paper, an instrument which contains a matter that contrasts with the whiteness of the paper, the letters of the alphabet, the convention which gives a meaning to the letters, 'orthography' = correct writing, the rules which order that language, what is called 'grammar', an idea to be expressed in a language, and a motive to express that idea'. Understanding the act of writing as a culturally embedded gesture, 'A Set of Lines, A Stack of Paper' covers artistic, literary, as well as curatorial and editorial fields of action and combines them. The book is published on the occasion of the correspondent exhibition at KARST, Plymouth (June 5 - July 5, 2015). The publication comprises an exhibition documentation with installation views and a curatorial statement. Furthermore, the author Maria Fusco situates the concept of the exhibition in an actual context of literature.
    The participating visual artists expand the topic of the exhibition with artistic contributions especially made for the book.

  • We are heading into a future where our choices will be shaped – if not outright determined – by algorithms and artificial intelligence. This coming state has been labelled “the new dark age” (James Bridle, 2018).
    It remains to be seen what this brings to photography, and vice versa.
    One thing, however, seems clear: photography, which has already changed significantly in the 21st century, is affected by – and in some important ways is part of – this development. This issue of “Fotografija” explores how programmes, apps and AI-related technologies shape and change the discourse of photography, challenging traditional boundaries of the medium.
    Various programmes and services – Google, Photoshop, Flickr, Snapchat, visual recognition, etc. – provide new tools to conceive image-making and think photographically. Technological interfaces not only deliver instruments for making work but can become the very logic for creating photographic series.
    The presented artists offer perspectives to raise questions and discuss these technological shifts. From dealing with traumatic events (Indrė Šerpytytė) and inaccessible sites (James Bridle) through technological mediation to playing with our expectations of an all-pervasive Photoshop manipulation (Erin E’Keefe). From exploring so-called smart surveillance systems (Esther Hovers) and censoring politically sensitive sites (Mishka Henner) to everyday glitches (Mantas Grigaitis). From playing with the copyrights of such collective websites as Flickr (Penelope Umbrico) to exploring the shared language of being in some of the most photographed places on earth (Thomas Albdorf). And from using Photoshop to create images (Aaron Hegert) to an image that is barely photographic (Zachary Dean Norman). The four essays (Kate Palmer Albers, Roksana Filipowska and Marijana Rayl, Ilaria Speri, Alise Tifentale) map out the works in broader social, historical and art contexts.
    In short, the works deal with our technologized world. They talk about being in the middle of changes that few have envisioned. Being so immersed, one can feel it (almost) hurts.

  • For several years, Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have organized evenings for friends in which they share the strangest photo books in their collections. The books shown are rarely available in regular shops, but are picked up in thrift stores and from antiquaries. The group’s fascination for these pictorial non-fiction books comes from the need to find images that exist on the fringe of regular commercial photo books. It’s only in this area that it’s possible to find images with an uncontrived quality. What’s noticeable from these publications is that there’s a thin line between being terrible and being awesome. This constant tension makes the books interesting. It’s also worth noting that these tomes all fall within certain categories: the medical, instructional, scientific, sex, humour or propaganda. Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have made a selection of their finest books from within this questionable new genre.

  • The Nabokov Paper is an experiment in novel-reading. The project takes as its starting point a now famous class taught during the 1950s by Vladimir Nabokov at Cornell University, New York State, entitled Literature 311-312: Masters of European Fiction. Nabokov’s approach to teaching literary reading was notoriously idiosyncratic. Convinced that one must teach the books themselves, not ideas or generalities, Nabokov would make diagrams of the floor plans of fictional buildings, map the routes taken by characters through the spaces of the novel, and draw items of clothing or furniture, he would also propose to track the course of a single letter, offer a visual representation of a stylistic device, and uncover what he called the mysteries of literary structures. His methods are striking for the range of gestures they call for in the name of good reading. The published Lectures on Literature (New York: Harcourt, 1980) concludes with an appendix of sample exam questions. Responding to those questions some sixty years after the fact offers a means to explore what Nabokov’s take on how to read might have to teach us today: about the novel, about how reading works across practices and disciplines, and about the past, present and future forms of literary criticism.

    The books from the Kaldewey Press are important documents of contemporary bookmaking that have been featured in exhibitions all over the world. Since the 1985 founding of his handpress, which Gunnar A. Kaldewey set up in Poestenkill, in upstate New York, over sixty unique artist books have been produced in cooperation with artists such as Jonathan Lasker, Mischa Kuball, or Richard Tuttle. Among the authors are famous names such as Samuel Beckett, Paul Celan, Marguerite Duras, and James Joyce. Published in small limited editions, the books are produced according to the highest level of craftsmanship. Kaldewey does the typesetting and prints the books, sometimes making the paper himself, too. The bookbinding is done by renowned workshops such as Christian Zwang's in Hamburg, or Jean de Gonet's in Paris.

    In unserer No. 7 präsentieren wir nun die Haut in ihrer ganzen gegenwärtigen und diachronen Vielschichtigkeit: In ­Gesprächen mit Forscher*innen über die Entwicklung von Roboterhäuten oder den Farbwechsel von Chamäleons zeigt sich die Haut als Objekt der Wissenschaft. Zugleich wird sie als individuelle und eigensinnige Grenzschicht vorgeführt, wenn etwa Esra ­Canpalat in ihrer Kurzgeschichte die undurchdringliche Walrosshaut des Vaters beschreibt oder Raoul Eisele den Liebeskummer in ­poetischen Hautschnitten seziert. Dass Haut als Ausgangspunkt neue Lesarten altbekannter Texte bietet, zeigen Till von ­Bergner und Daniel Neumann, die in ihren Essays ausgehend von Wunde und Geschwür Relektüren von Hegels Phänomen­o­logie bzw. der Geschichte Hiobs eröffnen.
    In den Kurzgeschichten, Artikeln, Gedichten und Essays oszilliert die Haut in unserer No. 7 zwischen den Diskursen. Sie wird geöffnet, beschrieben, eingeordnet, aufgelöst, durchstochen, geflickt und gedeutet. Mal ist sie schützende Grenze, mal sensible Kontakt- oder aufgeladene Projektionsfläche – eines ist sie jedoch immer: spannender Lesestoff.
